Our Favorite Stones: Montana Sapphires

Our Favorite Stones - Montana Sapphires

At EBJ our motto is, "thoughtfully designed, consciously handmade." And if you've been following us online or stopped in to see our pieces in person you're probably aware that one of the biggest ways we are conscious about our jewelry is through the ethical sourcing of our gemstones. This month is all about Sapphires (you lucky Leos ;) so we'd like to take the opportunity to highlight one of our favorite kinds of stones to work with, Montana Sapphires!

Each and every sapphire has its own unique crystalline structure, and this is why they can change colors with the light.

In an area known as the El Dorado Bar just off the Missouri River near Helena, Montana (also know as the Treasure State), a rich sapphire deposit was discovered and several mines began opening up in the 1980's. The sapphires from this area come in a rainbow of colors and even color-changing. Our personal favorite colors include vibrant blue-green just like the crystal blue waters in the tropics, pale sea-foam green, and mysterious lavender-blue.

Our Partners:

A really great husband and wife team have become the exclusive suppliers of Montana sapphires for EBJ. Not only do they mine the sapphires themselves, eliminating unethical labor, they are also careful of their environmental impact on the land as they mine. As topsoil is taken from the land to sift for the sapphires, it is afterwards replaced and covered with grass seed to return the area to its original beauty.

Each and every sapphire has its own unique crystalline structure, and this is why they can change colors with the light. The Montana sapphires we love can appear soft and pastel inside, but once out in the sunlight they can illuminate with with deeper colors that weren't there before. This is another reason we've deemed these stones one of our favorites - they make exquisite and uniquely brilliant engagement stones.
