The EBJ Custom Process is our step-by-step approach to creating one-of-a-kind pieces with intention behind every detail. At its core, it’s a personalized jewelry design experience rooted in collaboration, skilled craftsmanship, and thoughtfully sourced materials.
Every custom jewelry design is crafted with care, using thoughtfully selected stones and responsible sourcing practices. We highly recommend this process for engagement rings, heirloom creations, or transforming older jewelry into something you’ll love wearing again.

Step 1: Inspiration & Consultation
Every custom jewelry project begins with a relaxed consultation, either in person or online. You can share inspiration however you want, including Pinterest boards, screenshots, sketches, a photo of a ring you love, or even a story and a feeling you’re trying to capture. Nothing has to be “perfect” at this stage.
From there, our team helps turn your bespoke jewelry ideas into a clear direction. We’ll talk through style preferences, stone shape, metal choices, budget range, and how you want the piece to fit into your everyday life.
Step 2: Concept Development & Sketching
Once your direction is clear, we move into the creative phase of the jewelry design process. At this stage of custom jewelry design, our team turns your inspiration into a detailed sketch.
Next, we develop refined design mockups (and CAD renderings when needed) to help you clearly see proportions, setting style, and overall look.
The jewelry sketching process is fully collaborative. You’ll review the initial concept, share feedback, and request changes if something doesn’t feel quite right. Whether it’s adjusting band width, refining stone size, or reworking small details, we shape it together until it feels complete.
We also recommend specific materials and gemstones based on your budget, lifestyle, and personal style. Nothing moves into production until you’re fully confident in the final design.

Step 3: Stone Selection & Material Sourcing
Here, your custom jewelry project begins to take shape in a tangible way. We guide you through selecting the right diamonds, gemstones, and metals to match your vision, lifestyle, and budget.
You’ll explore options such as natural and lab-grown diamonds, along with a range of ethically sourced gemstones. We’ll also walk through metal choices (yellow, white, or rose gold, as well as platinum), and explain how different karats and finishes affect durability over time.
Ethical gemstones and sustainable jewelry materials are central to how we work, and we’re transparent about where our stones come from and how they’re sourced. You’ll also receive clear information on quality and pricing.
Step 4: Crafting & Production
Finally, our jewelers bring these designs to life!
Depending on the piece, this stage can include casting the metal, hand-finishing the structure, setting the stones, and polishing everything to a clean, bright finish.
Made by hand in our Detroit studio, most custom projects take around 8 weeks. Since this is handcrafted jewelry, the timeline may shift slightly depending on design complexity, stone availability, and the level of detail. You’ll get a clear schedule up front, plus updates along the way.
We keep the process moving, but we don’t rush the work. Before your piece is finished, it goes through a final quality check to confirm the setting is secure, the details are crisp, and everything meets EBJ standards.

Step 5: Final Reveal & Delivery
At the end of the EBJ Custom Process, we’ll schedule your reveal, either in our studio or through a suitable delivery option. Your final jewelry piece is presented in EBJ packaging, ready to gift, propose with, or keep for yourself.
For custom jewelry delivery, we’ll walk you through secure shipping options and timing to make sure it arrives safely and on schedule. We’ll also share simple care tips and can help with resizing if needed.
